I love living in small town Paxton, Nebraska. Actually, like I tell my friends from away, it truly isn’t even a town. It’s a village. A village of farmers, ranchers, and truly, salt of the earth people. That’s why we named our favorite espresso blend “Little Village.”
We live on the longest street in Paxton. It might be two miles, end to end, with the school on one end. Sometimes I’ll hear a noise, look out and what do you know? The school band is practicing right outside our window. Our street is always full of little people biking and rollerblading and laughing together. I love to see it. They’ll stay outside, hanging out, until it’s dark and they have to go home. The kids own the streets here. :)
I walk our little village most days. Almost everyone is friendly. There’s an old grandpa who sits in his window and waves to me every time I walk by. There’s a sweet old lady who likes to stop me for a chat any time I walk by her duplex, and there’s the kids that’ll yell from their yards to ask if you’ve seen their missing kitten.
I often think there’s no way you could be lonely living in a small town. One morning we had 4 people stop at our house BEFORE 8 am. One needed a wheelbarrow, and the others were stopping to chat. One of our neighbors will give you all the farm fresh eggs you’ll ever need in the cutest little cartons, (yes, there are chickens in this tiny village) another neighbor might bring you a couple slices of homemade pie, and another neighbor might stop to ask “WHAT are you doing in your yard? No detail goes unnoticed. I’m thinking of planting some tall flowers this year around our lot so we have a small bit of privacy lol.
But it’s all pretty fun. We have friends who’ll invite us for supper and we walk a block and we’re there. It’s really neat to be part of a community who still depends on each other.
xx.
